In continued support of the Canada-Japan Energy relationship, this year, in partnership with the Embassy of Canada to Japan, and the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan will host a seminar and networking event focused on policy developments and commercial opportunities in traditional and renewable energy in Canada.

Canada is the world’s fifth-largest natural gas producer and it is a potential LNG supplier to Japan and Asia. Canada is also an oil producer and has significant oil reserves. Canada’s strengths lie in the fact that it is it is well positioned to become a reliable and stable supplier, has a large resource potential and convenient market access to Japan across the Pacific basin.

With 65 % of total electricity generated in Canada coming from renewable sources, Canada has the third largest renewable energy capacity in the world and offers foreign investors opportunities across the entire value chain, from technology development and fuel supply to energy generation, storage and distribution. Renewables continue to account for an increasing share of Canadian electric capacity added each year, hydroelectricity being the largest source accounting for over 60% of electricity generation. Other renewable sources, such as biomass, wind, marine and solar, contribute to increasing Canada’s renewable energy generation—wind and solar energy are the fastest growing sources of electricity in Canada.

Canada's Department of Environment and Climate Change is developing a climate change framework and new policies to promote renewable energy by working closely with the the provincial governments. Alberta and British Columbia have introduced carbon pricing mechanisms, and a Cap and Trade system will link California, Ontario and Quebec. In late November 2015, Canada pledged $300 million a year in funding towards clean technology and innovation.

This seminar will open with a plenary session looking at Canada as a whole, followed by province-specific updates from Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Following the plenary, the conference will be divided into two simultaneous breakout sessions focusing on: Renewable Energy and Clean Technologies including, solar and wind power, smart grid and eco-housing; and, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies.

世界第5位の天然ガス生産国のカナダは、日本をはじめとするアジア地域にLNGを供給する潜在力を持っています。また、カナダは大量の石油を埋蔵する産油国でもあります。エネルギー分野でのカナダの優位点としては、信頼性の高い安定した供給国になる十分な能力を備えていること、豊富な資源を有していること、太平洋に面し日本への市場アクセスが良いことなどが挙げられます。

総発電量の65%を再生可能な資源から得ているカナダは、世界第3位の再生可能エネルギー生産能力を有し、技術開発や燃料供給からエネルギーの生成、貯蔵、供給まで、バリューチェーン全体にわたって外国の投資家にビジネスチャンスを提供しています。カナダの発電能力における再生可能エネルギーの割合は毎年増加を続け、最も比率が大きい水力発電は、総発電量の60%以上を占めています。バイオマス、風力、海洋、太陽光など、水力以外の再生可能資源も、カナダでの再生可能エネルギー生成の増加に寄与し、風力および太陽エネルギーの利用は、カナダで最も成長著しい発電方法となっています。

カナダ環境・気候変動省は、州政府との緊密な連携により、再生可能エネルギーを推進する気候変動枠組みと新たな政策の構築に取り組んでいます。アルバータ州とブリティッシュ・コロンビア州は市場価格による炭素排出量取引制度を導入し、また米国カリフォルニア州、オンタリオ州、ケベック州は、キャップ・アンド・トレード型排出量取引制度で連携します。2015年11月、カナダはクリーン・テクノロジーと技術革新に年間3億カナダドルを投じることを決定しました。

本セミナーでは、初めにカナダのエネルギー事情を概観し、続いてアルバータ、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア、オンタリオ、ケベック州が各州の最新事情を説明します。全体での討論の後は、参加者がそれぞれ関心を持つテーマに分かれてのグループ・セッションとなります。テーマとしては、従来型エネルギー、再生可能エネルギーとクリーン・テクノロジー（太陽光・風力発電、スマートグリッド、エコハウジングなど）、水素技術などが予定されています。
