Lunch and Learn: Avenues for Canadian Prosperity in an Post-Rules Based Trading System
Whether or not the United States proceeds with blanket tariffs on Canadian exports, it is clear that the rules based, predictable global trading system that Canadian businesses have relied on for growth is coming under fire. Liberal Party of Canada leadership candidate Mark Carney has gone so far as to declare that "the old rules based order is finished." If so, what comes next?
Canadian businesses and Canadian society now face the task of understanding and navigating the decline of a rules based trading system and, until a new system emerges, a period of unwelcome uncertainty. What frameworks can we draw on to understand how the global trading system may evolve as the familiar Canada-US trade relationship shifts and strains? What opportunities exist for Canadian businesses in this changing landscape? What role is there for like-minded middle powers like Canada and Japan to forge a new trading system consistent with our shared values?
In this Lunch and Learn session organized for members of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan, we will hear from Dr Stephen Nagy, geopolitical analyst and Professor at the Department of Politics and International Studies at the International Christian University, and Trevor Kennedy, Vice President, Indo-Pacific at the Business Council of Canada.
This will be a moderated panel discussion with ample time for audience questions.
